Looking for an epic cut? It’s time to part your hair from a new perspective. Men, do you know where to part your hair from so that you can have the perfect look to complement your awesome face shape?

The trend to wear hair parted at different heights is quite fashionable. You probably did this hairdo every day in your school days. Little did anyone know that it would make the biggest comeback of all time.

The parted hairstyle was mainly practiced by nerds and geeks in the late ‘90s and was not considered fashionable. Until recently when celebrities started rocking this hairstyle again with a modern touch to it.

But, which side should i part my hair?

Speaking of which, a man’s haircut should be shaped according to his face and head, but it all begins with the part.

What is my natural hair part?

what is the natural hair part

It is your scalp’s natural hair line that separates your hair into two sides. It begins with the spiral, which can be found at the crown of your head. They are popularly recognized as the ‘cowlick.’ The ones located at the top of the head are the most visible. Others can be located at the back of the head, either on the left or the right.

Where to part your hair?

The best way to part your hair is to follow the natural part on your head. Regardless of what face structure you have, following the natural line of your head will save you tons of time figuring out which haircut or hairstyle to go with.

To determine which side to part, observe your cowlick in the mirror. If it is placed on the left side, part your hair on the left. If it is placed on the right side, part your hair on the right.

A majority of men have a single cowlick. Some men have two, one located on each side. In such cases, you can part your hair however you like. Be it either from the left or right.

You could even do a middle part dividing the hair into two equal portions into both sides.

Following this, the next question arises-

Which side should I comb & part my hair on?

which side should i comb my hair

Men naturally comb in the direction of the combing arm. This means, if you have the comb in your right hand, you’ll be combing your hair to the right. And if you have the comb in your left arm, you’ll comb your hair to the left.

Another effective method to decide which side to comb your hair is to follow your natural part’s direction. If the part runs clockwise, comb your hair to the right. If it runs counter-clockwise, comb your hair to the left.

You will likely comb your hair in the opposite direction where your part is located. For instance, if the cowlick is on the left, you may end up combing your hair to the right. If your cowlick is located on the right, you may comb it to the left.

If you’re one of the few guys with two cowlicks, you could part your hair from the middle and comb your hair to the opposing sides.

How to find my natural part?

There are few and effective methods to locate your natural part.

Method 1

Sprinkle water over your hair to get it damp. Let it settle for a few seconds, and you will find the hair will have a natural separation of its own. The majority of your hair will weigh down on one side. The separation is where your natural part lies.

Method 2

For this method, you will require a comb and a shower. Begin with washing your hair in a shower. When you step out of the shower, towel-dry your hair only to the point until it is damp. From here, take a comb and locate your cowlick with the help of a mirror.

Draw a line from the cowlick to the front of your temple. Start combing your hair in the opposing direction of the line. Suppose the line lies on the left; comb your hair to the right.

You can do the same if the line lies on the other side.

Method 3

This method is by far the easiest one that you could try to find your natural part. First, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner. Step out and partially dry your hair with a towel. Now all you have to do is shake your head and let your hair fall. Your hair will fall in its natural alignment.

The hair will create a natural origin spot. Following that origin spot, you will observe a natural split in the hair that originates from the back of your head and meets with your temple. This split will be your natural part.

Men with two splits can part their hair in whichever direction they prefer to. This will occur mainly in men with two cowlicks.

It is indeed pretty easy from here onwards once you have located your natural part. Now that you’re aware of how to locate it. Hold your crown at the top with your fingers and form a line down to the front.

Use a tail-comb to do this perfectly. Take the comb’s tail to draw the line from the crown and even out individual strands on their belonging side to achieve a sharp part. After all, a messy-looking part won’t be making you look any attractive.

To enhance the part, use a styling product to separate the splitting sides from each other, giving you a crisp look.

Styling your part

Some of the most common hairstyles to go well with a part are the side part hairstyle and the middle parts.

On the one hand, where the side part serves great for men with short hair, the middle part is known for long hair.

The side part roots to the late ‘80s and ‘90s. It was made popular then by rock & roll and jazz artists. It was a height of fashion that women found attractive. Some African-American artists were pressured to jell into this style which was obviously difficult for them considering their hair texture. So they went through a process called ‘Conking‘ to achieve the look. And not to mention, it became incredibly famous.

Even James Bond wore the side part hairstyle for almost a decade. Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan have been seen carrying this hairstyle long before it even caught the general public’s attention.

Later the side part hairstyle was seen only among school-going children whose moms did their hair. Kids who wore it were termed as nerds and geeks.

With the commencement of the 21st century, this hairstyle got back into the spotlight when celebrities started rocking this hairdo again. If you’re a comics fan, you must know that Superman has been wearing this style all along.

Actors like Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, Tom Welling have worn this hairstyle remarkably well.

Leonardo DiCaprio;s hair part

While the side part took the spotlight, the middle part didn’t fall back. You can see Leonardo DiCaprio in his youth rocking the middle part, and there’s no denying how trending that was.

Earlier I mentioned that hairstyles should be based on face shape and the part. Now that we know about the part let us look at some face shapes that go well with a side part.

Oval Face: Face length longer than cheekbones’ width. The forehead is wider than the jaw, with the jaw angle being a little curved. Avoid having a tight top section while styling your side part. Keep the sides short to give the illusion of a sharper jawline. Use layers to add volume to the top.

Square Face– Sharp jaw angles on the sides. Face length is similar on all sides. Pretty safe to experiment with the sides on this face shape. Since all measurements are pretty much the same, the part would look attractive from either side.

Triangle Face– Narrow jaw angle with a wider forehead. The jaw remains sharp. Keep the sides short and the top section bouncy for a bit of volume. A side part with sides faded would be a go-to hairstyle for this shape.

Face shapes that go well with a middle part:

Triangle: Giving that wide forehead some volume on the top and keeping it strict on the sides will be enough to complement your face shape. For example, a thick quiff or a pompadour will be great.

Diamond Shape: A structured diamond face will go well with long bangs parted from the middle. The long side sweeps will provide volume to the face.

Conclusion

Figure out where your natural part is located and the structure of your face. Then go ahead with styling your hair that enhances your part and complements your face.
